It wasn't even noon yet but there was a knock on the door. Brian had left about thirty minutes earlier. I walked over and answered, to my surprise it was Brian.
"We got the day off Brian," I was relieved it was just him. "Go home, relax. Tomorrow we'll pick up where we left off."
"Sorry we got a new mission," He looked serious. "We are headed to New York, not New York City, some rural area. They are airdropping us in."
"You are serious," I sighed. "Alright give me a minute to get my gear together."
"No need, you are dressed they got everything else we'll need in the plane," He answered and turned back to his car.
I grumpily got in the car, "So what's the mission?"
"We'll both be more formally briefed on the plane en route to the target," Brian said. "I don't even know what exactly they want us to do."
That made me feel better, I would have been hurt and angry if they'd told him and not me. I was, after all, the real spy and not just playing spy.
*On the Plane and in the Air*
"Have you ever done this before?" I asked him.
He shook his head. The plane was small but very nice. There was a TV screen with a built-in camera and a microphone, was built-in. Before I could say more the TV flashed on.
"Agent Grayson, Agent Burnett," It was Secretary Landon. "This is a recon mission. Engage the target only if you are threatened. If the target is hostile, bring him in. Otherwise the mission is to scout and evaluate the abilities of the target."
I was slightly confused, "Abilities sir?"
"Agent Burnett knows what I mean," Brian nodded and he continued. "Agent Grayson, your primary role is to make sure Agent Burnett makes it safely to the ground. He's never done a drop before and will need help. Once on the ground the target will be approximately five miles to the northeast through the forest."
"Do we have a picture?" I asked.
"Agent Burnett should be able to identify the target," He glanced at Brian, who shrugged. "If not the only information we have is that he is a small, nerdy looking kid with glasses."
I nodded, "That's good enough for me, sir."
"The drop is in five minutes. Get your gear on." The screen turned off.
"Alright let's get you geared up then."
Truth be told me real reason for being so nervous of this other agent is I could sense he was good and I was worried I might be replaced by him. I wasn't much older than he was, maybe four years so he really could be used as my replacement. I don't know maybe I was just being paranoid.
We had ear pieces so we could communicate if we got separated during our fall and regroup.
"Drop zone coming up," I heard over the ear piece. "Open the door and get ready to jump."
"You ready," I had to scream as I'd opened the door.
He nodded and looked excited, "I've always wanted to do this."
I rolled my eyes and pushed him out. I jumped a moment later. I pulled my chute fairly quickly but, I could see him zooming down below me.
"Pull your chute Brian!" I screamed into my watch, which was hooked up to the ear piece.
I saw his chute open up far below me and I reached the ground a couple minutes after he did. He came running up to me.
"We are about three miles of course," He was breathing normally. "In the wrong direction. Come on we have to make up for that."
I nodded and started running with him. Evac was at a set time and if we missed it, it would mean we'd have to walk, run or hitchhike home. We had exactly two hours for our mission. that meant we had to move eight miles in about one hour to have enough time.
Half way there I called for a break. Brian had been ahead the entire time. He ran back, he was barely breathing heavily.
"What's wrong?" He asked. "You must be tired. We can take a short break, since you need one."
Whether it was intentional or not I got angry by that statement, "No I thought you needed the break. Let's move."
He rolled his eyes and kept moving. When we finally stopped I felt like my lungs were no longer on fire because they'd already burned up. He had pushed us to a pace of six minutes to a mile. Doing that for eight miles I was not used to. He looked only slightly winded.
"How on earth are you not tired," I said between breaths.
"That is actually above top secret," He looked away when he answered. "I wish I could tell you but you don't like me and would hate to be stuck with me as a partner."
This man was very observant, I thought I kept my feelings of disgust hidden so well.
"Alright whatever," I stood up. Breathing more easily now, "Any idea which way to go?"
We were on the outskirts of a small town. He pointed to a building, "The school."
"Our target is in high school?" I was in disbelief as he nodded.
"A lot of our targets will be," That answer surprised me more. "Let's get moving."
We had stripped our paradrop gear off when we'd landed so we looked like normal people for the most part, ok well, not like these people. It was fairly obvious we were outsiders. I saw the person who might have been the target in one of the windows, unfortunately he saw me. He got up and ran. I completely forgot our orders and I chased him.
Brian didn't notice for a second and was a good ways behind me. I chased him into the woods and pulled out my gun.
"Stop we're with the CIA!" I yelled at him.
He looked back and did not look happy to see me pursuing him. He was unarmed but only about thirty feet in front of me.
"Don't move," I told him. I heard Brian catching up to me, "I got him Agent Burnett."
"Put the gun away Agent Grayson," Brian commanded me. "We aren't here to bring him in unless he is hostile."
"You want to bring me in?" He sneered. "Yeah as if you could."
I saw a log pick up off the ground and start flying at me. I ducked underneath but it changed direction and hit into me. The gun flew out of my hands and hovered in the air. It turned and pointed at my head. I put up my hands.
"How is he doing this Brian?" My voice was panicked.
"I told you there were things you didn't know," He didn't appear surprised by this turn of events. "Put down the gun kid. Put down the gun and I'll pretend you didn't try to kill my partner and let you go."
"Or I could shoot her and then shoot you," He threatened.
Something changed on Brian's face, "You can try and you will fail."
I tried to move but just then realized I couldn't. I couldn't breathe either. Brian looked and me and I saw him wink at me.
Brian moved his hands in my direction and the gun flew into a nearby tree. The kid looked surprised as a Brian grabbed me and pulled me behind a tree.
"Stay here alright?" He said. "Don't get yourself killed."
Well I wasn't going to stay there while this guy tried to kill my partner. I glanced around the corner and saw Brian hiding behind a tree about ten feet from me and twenty feet or so from the other guy. The guy saw me and made some hand motions. Brian saw me and I could see him motioning for me to get my head down. I moved back behind cover but a large log was too close to dodge. At the last second a large chunk of earth shot up from the ground and slammed the log to the side.
"So you are earth?" The kid shouted. "That's good to know."
My heart was racing and I quickly shuffled into the next spot. I heard some fighting and peaked around the corner to see Brian fighting the kid. Brian was somehow able to move the earth at will and the kid was, telekinetic, I think. After a few minutes the two backed away.
"I guess you are too skilled for me to fight Agent Brian," The kid laughed. "But your partner is a norm, isn't she."
I gulped as he turned and looked at me. I felt my body freeze and the kid looked back at Brian.
"Fetch boy," I lifted off into the air and I broke through the tops of the trees and continued flying over the tops for quite some time. I suppose it probably seemed like longer than it actually was because I was flying uncontroably above the tops of these trees.
I crashed down through the trees at the edge of the forest, probably better than missing the forest altogether. I took a quick evaluation and realized if my leg didn't stop bleeding I'd be dead in a matter of minutes.
Brian got there moments later and I smirked at him, "I know your secret now. Too bad I won't live to be of use to you."
I was near passing out I heard him say, "I swear you won't die today, even if I have to give you my blood to replace that which you have lost." I couldn't hear anything else.
* Hours Later *
I woke up in my house, a bandage on my leg. Brian was sitting on the edge of my bed.
"Good to see you awake," He smiled.
"What happened?" I asked. "I know I should have died but something stopped me."
He nodded, "That was me. I couldn't let you die because I screwed up."
"What do you mean I'm the one who charged after him," I wanted to yell but I didn't have the strength.
He smirked, "You are in for a rough night and I can't guarantee what exactly will happen to your body, but until you know otherwise never promise anything unless you know you can keep it."
"Why?" I asked him.
"Because if you get powers like me," He explained. "You will lose them if you break your promises, intentionally or otherwise."
After he spoke he stood up and started to leave. He said one last thing before he walked out, "At the very least you will find yourself, faster, stronger, tougher than before. More than you can possibly imagine."
He left before I could ask any more questions. That is quite the secret.
