Brian Burnett

* M.B talking with the president *

"I know you told me not to bring this to you but, we have a new situation sir," M.B said handing the president a folder. "Some new kind of power user."

"Armor and he could fly?" The president was obviously skeptical.

"According to one report he took a full bolt of lightening and stood up on the other end of the city after smashing into the ground."

"Who do we have that can handle it?" He asked.

M.B looked around uneasily, "You put him on desk duty sir."

"Ivar is the only one we have?" He looked concerned. "He's going to throw this in our faces, you know that right?"

"Give him a chance sir," M.B pleaded. "He's might have been angry but not without cause, he felt he had no choice but to save her life."

"Fine. You tell him."

M.B nodded and walked out of the room.

* Saturday morning, hours before the above meeting around the same time that Jared was attacked *

I walked into the office and sat down at a desk. Frustrated was the least of his emotions right now.

"Welcome to my world Brian." It was Mike. "You are going to follow my commands until you get off desk duty."

"Do you know why I'm the youngest CIA agent ever Mike?" I asked, innocently.

Mike smirked, "Intimidation won't work on me Brian. I know you can't use your powers here without getting in more trouble."

I stood up and and grabbed him by the throat and picked him up off the ground with a single arm, "I wasn't referring to my powers." I set him down, "I'll do what you say Mike. Just don't intentionally irritate me."

Mike was surprised and quickly collected himself, "Good Brian that's just what I'd expect."

The rest of the day consisted of me being bossed around like some kind of trivial house pet. I could have told the president to go to hell and quit, that was one of the stipulations I insisted on keeping after our negotiations. I could quit whenever I felt like it and not be breaching the contract, but I couldn't let Kimberly be punished alone because of me. I suppose that's why he did it to her as well.

A few hours after noon Jessica burst into the office I was working in. She threw something on the desk in front of me, "What's that?" She was obviously angry, I could almost see the fire seething from her body.

It was my PDA, I picked it up and... I never took that picture.

"I lost this in New York during my last mission. Someone, probably the kid I was fighting, found it and modified this picture," I answered. She wanted to believe me. It was a bad time for my partner to walk in.

"Hey Brian could you help me real quick?" Kimberly was the woman depicted on the PDA.

I shook my head, "I'm a little busy right now."

Kimberly walked out and Jessica looked at me, "Who is that?"

"Look I took this picture," I showed her the one I'd taken of Kimberly walking out of a building as I was being introduced to her. "She's my partner."

"Oh? Your partner?" She took it the wrong way.

"No not like that I-" Jessica cut me off.

"I don't want to hear it Ivar," She had tears running down her face. She was about to leave when I jumped closer and kissed her on the lips.

"We work together on missions," I explained. "That's all."

"And they shared DNA," Allison said, she was trying to get me in trouble.

"No we didn't," I nearly yelled. "I gave her some of my blood because she had lost most of hers. We didn't share I gave her what she needed to survive." Allison disappeared as quickly as she had appeared.

Jessica visibly relaxed, "So you got in a fight with another magic user, lost your PDA but he didn't like you and used it to try and get me to join him?"

I shrugged, "I guess, but how did you get it?"

"One of my friends had it," She said. "I'm going to go now I-"

I cut her off, "My name is Brian here."

"I'll see you later Brian." She walked out. I could tell she was still confused, so I didn't pursue her like I wanted to. She needed her time to think about it.

I went back and sat down at my desk. Kimberly came in a few moments later.

"So that's your girlfriend," Kimberly said. "Seems like a nice girl, a bit confused."

"Someone was trying to make it look like we'd slept together," I answered the obvious, unasked question.

I was about to ask her what she needed me to help with when Secretary Landon walked in.

"You need me," I smirked. "Why should I help you?"

"What?" M.B looked confused. "We have a mission."

"I know. Otherwise you wouldn't be here. So answer my question. Why should I help you?" I asked frankly. "I realize I didn't have authority to reveal the things I did to my partner." M.B raised his hand for me to stop and he motioned for her to leave before he shut the door.

"This has nothing to do with that," M.B said. "This one is more powerful, or seems to be more powerful than any you have encountered yet, possibly even more powerful than you. We need you Ivar."

I leaned back in my chair, "Find somebody else."

"I can expunge this event from her record," He said suddenly. "It will be as though she was only here because we had nothing for her to do."

"Swear it M.B," I demanded. "If you promise it will go away I will take this mission."

He gulped, "I promise I'll make it go away if you complete the mission."

"Done," I stood up. "Oh one more thing. She comes with me."

He nodded, "Fine."
