Agent Burnett

We headed back to the office, it was still early in the day. Some freak accident had knocked out the bridge yesterday and so we had to take the long way a couple blocks down. I drove past the CIA building we should have stopped at to complete our mission.

"What are you doing?" My partner was not amused. "You were supposed to stop back there."

I shook my head, "Things got a little more complicated." I was beginning to piece this together. I went to the hospital and found one of the doctors who had been treating Victor.

"You used Victor Taber's son's blood because it was a rare type correct?" I asked quickly.

The doctor, recognizing me, nodded. I thanked him and left the building, my baffled partner following close behind.

"We have to see the president," I said sighing. "I can't have a partner that only knows half the story."

She didn't say anything but I could tell she was hoping to get to know everything. We drove up to the gate and I flashed my badge, "We're here to see the president."

He called inside, "I've got two CIA agents who need to speak to the president."

We couldn't hear the other side of the conversation but we heard him reply, "Agent Brian Burnett is one of them." The other side interrupted and the guard looked at us, "Go on inside agents."

He opened the gate and I drove up, parked and walked inside. Kim was following close behind. I walked into the outer office of the president and the secretary motioned for us to sit down.

"He's in a meeting but it should be ending very soon," She answered smiling.

We waited for about ten minutes before the president walked in and motioned for me to follow.

"Wait here Kim," I reassured. "I'll try and get him to up your security status."

I know she'd thought she had the highest level status before but she hadn't. I walked in behind the president and he sat in his chair.

"What can I do for you Brian?" He smirked.

It took me a second to realize that was my name, "I can't have a partner that doesn't know the truth about what we do or everything about what I can do. I need a partner that can trust me."

"You want a new partner?" He looked confused. "You picked her because the CIA director recommended her because of her skills."

I shook my head, "I want her security status upgraded to cover me."

"Bring her in here," He said into the intercom. She walked in and stood uncomfortably at attention. "Relax, come sit here agent."

She moved forward and sat down but, before she could speak the president asked, "You do realize if you were to become privy to all the knowledge that Agent Burnett is that you would be his partner on a much more permanent level."

She shook her head, "I didn't realize that. Is he really that significant of a secret?"

"Yes he is," The president answered her. "The truth is you wouldn't believe most of what he can do if he didn't show you." He turned to me, "So Brian, why is it you want her to know the truth, specifically."

"This disease, if you want to call it that, is contagious," I said.

"We're hunting a disease?" She said in disbelief.

"Just know that anything you hear in this room does not leave this room," The president reminded her. "That and we aren't telling you everything." He turned back to me, "Contagious how?"

"Blood," I replied. "Officer Victor Taber, I think he was infected by his son because he received blood from him due to an accident of some kind."

"Where is Officer Taber now?"

I shook my head, "We were unable to locate him or his son. We have a few more leads to follow up on later but..."

"That's good, take the rest of the day off," He looked at my partner. "You go home and think about that more fully. I want to see you both tomorrow evening."

"Wait," I was slightly confused. "We don't get weekends off?"

Kim scoffed, "No we don't get any day off, unless you specifically request it."

"Dismissed," Kim left the room first. "And Ivar," I froze and turned back. "Any more issues like this, take them to Secretary Landon."

"Yes sir."

I stopped my partner off at what I figured was her cover apartment. I got out and she shook her head when I was about to go inside.

"Sorry just trying to figure out how my partner thinks. I guess I'll be going now," I turned and began walking to my car.

"Don't take this personally Brian," She said. "But you pulled me off a very important case and I can't even know the details without it becoming permanent, not exactly my idea of a fun assignment."

"I can tell you one thing," I smirked. "When we change locations in a few weeks and are based somewhere else, you will be staying here or coming with us. Your choice."

"So a few weeks of trusting someone who can't even tell me what is so special about him? Sounds like a picnic," She said sarcastically.

I stepped closer, "And to think the director recommended you above all other spies to train me. I'm certain he must have been wrong, the way you have been so cranky."

I got in my car and drove off before she could respond, that will keep her thinking for a while.
