I woke up on the floor in my house and looked around surprised. It was around nine so, my dad would be gone til later. I knew my mom would be waiting for me in the kitchen and I decided not to drag out my sentencing. I walked casually into the room and sat down at the table across from her. My little brother was there as well.
"What's he doing home?" I asked, not wanting to talk in front of him about this.
"It seems he heard about your good example and got into a few fights of his own at school."
Oh man, I'm toast now, I scratched my head. She just looked at me and shushed him when he tried to defend myself. After a few moments of her just staring I asked, "What do you want me to say?"
"Tell him that you screwed up and shouldn't have been in a fight," She said. "If you do that I'll make your punishment less painful."
"But mom I was just defending myself," She didn't want to hear it.
"Tell him you screwed up or I'll do more than just take your car and ground you."
My fists clenched and I took a deep breath, "Are you trying to keep me from seeing Jessica?"
My mom had never actually liked Jessica, though she tried to pretend she did, and this is something she could easily use as an excuse to keep her away.
She looked shocked, "No, it's not like that Ivar."
"Whatever," I turned to the little brat. "I shouldn't have gotten in a fight with a girl no matter how good she was at fighting. I made a mistake and I've already apologized to her." I went one step further to sate my mother, "And you should apologize too."
"But Ivar," He complained. "They were making fun of you."
My mom looked at him, "What? You didn't tell me that before."
"I thought you'd just get mad at him some more," He complained.
"Alright go play honey," She said to my brother and after he was gone she turned to me. "Well I think he'd have gotten in a fight about this without your recent getting in trouble so, you are off the hook, but you are still grounded and I want your keys."
I handed her the keys and she left the room, probably to go hide them. I got myself some breakfast and tried to pretend nothing had changed. Out of all the people in the world, why was I chosen for this, or was I chosen at all and it was just the happenstance of my location on that day. It had to have been chosen because she didn't give powers to all the children in the hospital, just all the children in the nursery or whatever. My thoughts continued along those lines and I didn't really do anything besides think until after dinner. I was sitting on the couch in the family room deciding what game to play.
My brother plopped down on the couch next to me, "So what are you up to?"
"I'm looking for a game," I told him.
"Do you have magical powers?" He was a very tactless child.
"What are you talking about?"
"I have magic powers I was wondering if you did," He sounded so sure of himself.
"That's not possib..." I trailed off. If it was carried in the blood than it was possible. I sat there dumbfounded for a moment.
"What's wrong big brother?" He inquired.
I looked him in the eyes, "What can you do with your powers?"
He shrugged, "Lots of stuff."
"Well don't use them recklessly." Now if he knows what that means he'll be fine. I had a feeling I needed to go outside for a moment.
"Hey I'll be back later and we can play," I told him.
"You promise?" He looked happy.
"No promises, but the chances will be higher if you stay here and don't try and follow me this time."
"But you are grounded and you don't have a car."
I rolled my eyes, "I'm just going outside."
When I said that he got a dumbfounded look on his face and started looking for a game for the two of us to play. I walked to the front door and slowly opened it and went outside. Hopefully my parents didn't hear that.
"Hey Ivar," I smiled when I heard her voice.
"Hey Jess," She came over and embraced me. "I missed you today."
"I missed you too," She pulled on my arms. "Come on."
"I'm grounded," I told her. "I can't go. I'm probably get in trouble just being out here."
"Please Ivar," She begged. "I really want to spend some time with you."
My heart was torn, "I can't ruin my parents trust in me."
"Your eighteen Ivar," That was my dad's voice. "You can do whatever you want."
Jessica took a step back, she'd never actually met my dad, in some ways he was busier than her dad. I figured he was testing me, "But I still live here."
He smirked, "But you want to live with her. I've seen the way you look at her, the way I looked at your mother years ago."
"So you are saying I should run away?" I couldn't believe my dad was on my side.
"It's not running away at your age," He laughed. "It's called moving out and starting your own family. And I know your next question is how you would support yourself, you know my business and I had some people quit today. I think I might be able to fit you in."
"Why are you doing this dad?" My eyes were full of tears.
"Because you are my son and I don't want you to leave and never see you again because of the constrains we put on you. We haven't made life easy on you though it has come easy for you." He stepped closer and put his arms around me. He whispered in my ear, "I know you love Jessica and I think she's worth it. You can do anything with your life son. Pick the right things, pick the things that truly matter."
"What kind of things?" I pleaded for the answer.
"Family, friends," He said aloud and then he whispered the last. "Freedom."
He handed me the keys to my car, "It's yours now. All yours. If you are interested in my offer I guess I'll see you at my office tomorrow." He waved and walked back inside the house.
"Wow," Jessica was impressed. "I wish I'd met him sooner."
"Me too," I said. "He isn't around very much so all I normally see is him exhausted and tired from work."
"Would that be you if you worked for him?"
I shook my head, "He owns the business and invested a lot of time in making sure it runs perfectly. I'd just be a normal guy, I think."
"Well he just gave you permission to leave, didn't he?" She wondered.
"I think he was saying if I leave than I'm moving out," I answered. "But if it means moving in with you it's worth it." I turned and kissed her, "Let's get out of here."
