Kim

I'd been observing them for quite some time now. I had gotten used to the idea of there being two of me, but now that there was only me again it seemed odd. The other Kim was less skilled than myself and made it a habit to get killed, which drained both of us. I of course did everything in my power to stay alive. Unknown to them, I was actually living in the same place as them.

A few times I ran into Jared, Kindra or Rachel, but I told them I was just a memory. They didn't believe me of course, but they understood that I wanted to remain hidden. I just wish my other half hadn't been so foolish.

Now that it was all over, I felt safe to come out of hiding. I was a lot older than they had remembered me, I had survived many decades. I met Sterling and Rain face to face. I stood in their way.

"Excuse us." Rain said politely.

"You can't go."

"What? Who are you? And what right do you have. . ." then it hit him, "Kim? But we thought you were dead."

"Not yet. But this will be the last time I die." I said humbly, "You can't leave. The virus has already effected you and will eventually effect your ship. You will never make it home. And if you did, you would destroy them. There is no way of knowing how this virus would effect your people, it's best not to risk it."

"She's right." Rain slipped her hand into his and squeezed it tight, "Besides, Kindra needs us. And Rachel's son needs a playmate." she grinned warmly.

"Then it's settled. Come on, let's go tell the others we're not leaving after all."

"Please walk slow," I started, "I don't have the strength that I used to have. My old age is catching up to me. Now that the virus has taken over my body, I suspect I only have a short time left before I can finally cross over to the other side."

"You've been looking forward to this for a long time, haven't you?" Rain said as she put her arm around me.

"Longer than you'll ever know." I winked, "suffice it to say, I was there when Noah built his ark."

CONCLUSION:
Once they all met up again, they went deep into hiding. Kim only survived a few more hours. Rain and Rachel both gave birth to beautiful baby boys. Sterling stepped in to be father to both boys. And the rest is history. . .

Sometime in the past

Mike and Kim were left at the door in a panic. Then Mike realized something, he had the same ability as the man who invented the door in the first place. He got the door open in time for a few people to enter before a hoard of arrows came whizzing through the trees. One hit Kim and another hit him. He thought they were goners until a familiar woman pulled them into the fortress and shut the door.

They could hear the turmoil outside, but knew that they would be safe in the fortress. Kindra smiled when she recognized the girl she had rescued, "I knew you would come back for us."

Mike was genuinely confused, and even more so when Kim gasped her last breath of air and suddenly turned into a happy healthy five year old. Kindra could see his confusion and decided to tell him what was going on.

"She is one of the ancients, we believe. As far as we know, she can't die. When she dies she is reborn. The only problem is, as time goes by she loses her memories that were once restored with every birth."

"Why is that?" Mike was feeling faint.

"I don't know, we figure she just blocks out all the horrible things she seen in her life."

"I see. I don't mean to cut you off, but I haven't got a lot of time left. I need to tell you some things."

"Go on." She put his head on her lap and listened intently.

"You need to warn them."

"Warn who?"

"The last generation. My generation. Terrible things are going to happen if you don't warn them."

"I see." he countenance grew dim

"No, you need to be the light. You're the only hope these kids will have. And your son, Jared. You need to start creating him as soon as possible. . ."

"What? I'm not even married."

"Please, I. . .I'm fading fast. Do this last thing for me, when I die cut off my arm so you will always be able to open this door."

It was the last thing he said. Kindra sat helplessly holding this stranger in her arms. Just then a man entered the room. "He's right. The first thing we need to do is try to save as many of this generation first."

--Flash Forward in time--
Kindra and the man (Jared's father) have been locked away for some time. Every once in a while they had tried to mentally make a baby. Their first few attempts failed and ended in still birth or miscarriages. The guards were starting to get wise to the situation, so Kindra developed a new power that manipulated the minds of the guards to see her starving and thin instead of pregnant.

This was difficult to maintain because they kept switching guards on her. Mike was one of the successful births (the others had been killed by the government as soon as they were discovered). Luckily, there was a new man in charge, and he decided he wanted to study Mike. So he raised him as his own. Mike was never told where he had come from or anything about magic.

Eventually, his adopted father discovered that Mike didn't have any powers and decided to train him to be a super soldier. To his dismay, Mike wasn't interested in killing people, but instead interested in the advances in technology.

Kim had been killed a few times, and as Kindra predicted suppressed most of her memories. The only memory she kept was her combat training. She was discovered by the government in the 70s, killed, then reborn. So they decided to keep a close eye on her and try to raise her as their own. She, of course, rebelled and ran away. Being naive, she didn't survive on the streets very long. Eventually in the 2004 she was reborn again, and managed to find an orphanage to live in.

Needless to say, the government was very excited to discover her in high school in the 2020. She was 16 and very persuadable. As soon as she graduated and turned 18 the government owned her.

Since technically there were two Kim's living in that window of time between when she arrived in the past and when she left the present, only one Kim retained her memories. Once she was out of that window of time, the original Kim came out of hiding. This Kim is completely different from the Kim that we are familiar with. She has never met any of the other characters but knows all about them, since she retains all of the memories that her other self forgot as well as her own.

Confusing? Yes. That's time travel for you.

Sterling

I watched helplessly as Rachel and Kindra tried to fight Deothanos. I didn't know what to do, so I decided to try what Kindra had suggested. Only instead of speeding up time for Deothanos I actually froze time. Somehow I had managed to focus the magic only on him, but it only lasted a minute. Jared had come in while I was attempting to help and had somehow taken that power from me.

I wasn't angry, but it made me feel more helpless. As they struggled to get the Jewl from one another, I discovered that I had another ability that I wasn't aware of. As the Jewl slipped from Jared's hand and headed towards Deothanos I stopped it midair. It just floated there between the three of us for a moment until Deothanos overpowered us and held the Jewl in his hand.

I decided to join the girls for moral support. We watched Jared outsmart Deothanos. As his powers drained he became older and frail. Until eventually his old age caught up to him and he didn't have enough power left to stand. Though I had learned to hate this man from the time I was a small child I ran to him.

I lifted Deothanos' head and hugged him in my arms. "Why did you do it, Uncle?"

"Greed, my son, greed." He was surprisingly at peace, as if Jared had humbled his rebellous spirit.

We listened as Jared explained to Rachel and Kindra the responsibility they held.

"Those are wise words, my boy, but don't believe in such fairy tales. People are what they are, and in time another foolish man will come along and thirst for all the power in the universe. You must train your boy, and train him well. Listen to Kindra, become her devoted servant."

"Yes, uncle. I will."

"You're a good kid, I always liked you." He smiled a senile smile then closed his eyes and departed in spirit.

I cried openly, he was the last remaining of my family. Then I realized something, "No, he's not."

I stood up boldly and went to find Rain. We came back to talk to the others. "I am going home. I don't know if we'll make it, but I'm going to try. Before coming here, I gave most of my power to my ship. I am hoping the virus hasn't mutated enough to effect my ship yet." I then gently pulled the Jewl from the cold hand that was holding it, and handed it to Kindra, "as long as you have this, I will always be able to find you."

"We'll miss you!" Rain sobbed as she hugged the girls. We then parted ways and boarded our ship. "You'll love our home, especially now that you're a queen."

The World Situation

A week after first exposure riots began worldwide as nothing was able to stop this super-virus and it was beginning to kill people. Madagascar even closed all their ports and were killing anyone who tried to get there by boat, but somehow the virus got to them anyways. Every world government was overthrown in a matter of days, the dictatorships ran out of bullets and even burning the bodies didn't seem completely effective, probably because the infection rate was one hundred percent of people who were susceptible got the virus if they even came within twenty feet of an infected person.

People began to come together in groups, away from cities as the cities destroyed themselves. Two months after the last city went silent, as if the universe were saying it is done, the cities structures all around the world began to break down as the virus mutated even further and began to affect metal and concrete, even plastic. One year later and all of the worlds technology had faded, all that remained were isolated pockets of humans. The only children or elderly that had survive had been immune to the virus. Of those that weren't immune no one over the age of thirty or under the age of sixteen lived.

Jared

(It's taking too long so I figured out a way to slide this in there smoothly.)

My poor Kindra, her vision was failing already and I had only begun to do what I had set out to do. That's alright though, in the process I discovered the Jewl had many more properties than I had ever imagined.

I saw Sterling walk into the room where my wife and daughter were fighting Deothanos. I walked up to him and put a hand on his shoulder, "Don't worry brother. We can overcome him."

I walked into the room and waved at him. Everything in the room seemed to freeze as he looked at me. Rachel stopped attacking and so did Kindra. All three watched me as though I could move the world with this power and I could, but I needed something else.

"Hello Uncle," I smiled. "Well I guess you'd be more like a distant cousin."

He scowled, "So you really are a member of the royal house like me then?"

"Yes," I responded. "My ancestor forsook the throne and passed it to your ancestor, but that's beside the point. You want this don't you?" I held up the Jewl, taunting him.

His eyes lit up and he tried to rip it from my hands with his magic. I firmly held on to it and grinned, "I'm going to make you fight for it."

"You will lose," He answered. "I've been holding back thus far."

"I know," I held my grin. "And I was letting you keep me in prison. So I guess we're even. Oh wait that's right, I have the Jewl, even has no meaning now."

He again tried to rip it from my hands, this time he almost succeeded and it stopped somewhere in the air between us. He began throwing things at me trying to break my focus. I altered the metal in the room and created a barrier to protect me.

Rachel and Kindra stood behind me ready to act. I glanced back, "Stay out of this one girls. Just trust me."

A moment later I got hit by an object and thrown into a wall, "No!" The Jewl reached his hands and the walls of the room shook. Everyone slammed into the far walls, except me and he began crushing them like they were flies.

"Deothanos," I screamed. "I'm the one you're after, let them go!"

"Oh very well," He sighed. "But they were such fun little pets. Perhaps I'll keep Kindra and Rachel alive as my personal slaves. They are very beautiful, give them a few years and they'll be perfect."

I growled at him as he threw me around the room like a rag doll. He then picked me up and tried to crush me but to no avail.

"Why aren't you dying?" He said in frustration. "This should be working."

I smiled as I broke the grip he had on me and walked up to him, "Can't you feel it working?"

"I feel my power draining away," He complained. "How?"

"I altered the properties of the Jewl, it is giving me all you powers because you used its power," I shrugged. "I knew you'd fall for using it."

"There must be a catch," Deothanos said.

"I will die," I said frankly. "But so will you, your body is too old for the virus it is infected with."

"What are you going to do?" He asked. "Why did you need all my power and yours added together?"

"I need it to make certain nothing like you can ever happen again," I answered calmly as I picked up the Jewl and felt the surge of power flowing through my body. I could barely manage it. Deothanos was laying helplessly on the floor and I could feel the movements of the universe around me.

I nearly lost focus on what I was doing this for when Kindra and Rachel ran into the room. They starred at me in wonder. I imagine I must have looked strange to them, my powers would have been fully manifesting and I would have been dripping in power. I nearly killed both of them simply for existing, that's when I looked into Rachel's eyes and there I found my purpose.

"Father!" Kindra shouted. She turned to Rachel and said, "Mother, we have to give him our powers to help him, he needs all the power he can receive."

The surge of power increased as they gave me, truly, honestly, and in love, gave me their powers. I felt my body lift into the air and I saw even clearer the universe before me.

I had to watch my words at this point because I could feel the universe bending to my will. I thought methodically and the words just came to mind, "Magic will no longer be given as it has hitherto been given. From this day forth anyone or any species, with any level of intelligence, who truly and diligently seeks to command the forces of magic will be allowed to control it. There are no constraints on scope or depth of the power they wield, except that the body will still be used as a focusing device and there is the limit."

I felt the power fading and my life beginning to dwindle.

*Kindra's perspective*

"Father!" I screamed as he fell to the floor and didn't move. I ran to his side and lifted his head up gently. "Father? You can't go father."

He smiled up at me, "It's alright my darling." Tears were streaming down my face, my mother reached us a moment later, "My beautiful wife. Don't cry, I knew this was going to happen. I didn't have a choice. If I had waited much longer he would have killed you both."

I buried my face into his chest. He looked years older than he had moments earlier.

He spoke again to my mother, "Rachel, go to Deothanos. Receive the virus he carries, you will survive the change and so will the child." He placed a hand on her belly, "He'll be a healthy baby."

I could no longer see the future, or anything else. Magic had truly changed as he had commanded. Mother didn't want to go. He sighed and with great effort he stood and walked with her to Deothanos. I sat and stared at him in amazement. My father would be a legend, I would make sure he was remembered. There he was dying and still he worried about my mother more than his own life.

Deothanos was still alive but only barely, the virus hadn't done it, losing his powers had. He left my mother near him and walked back to me.

"Kindra," He smiled and stumbled. I caught him and laid him down.

"Not a very fitting place for a hero to die," I joked. "We should at least move you to something not metal."

He smiled again and replied, "That will not be necessary. Metal is my home, it is more fitting that I die here than anywhere else. Kindra, you must survive. Watch over your mother, she will change and your brother will not be a human, but watch over them. In many years to come a child of his will seek you out and want to learn magic from you. You must be ready to teach."

"What will happen to me?" I wondered. "What will the virus do to me?"

"Nothing," He answered. "You are immune. So go, take your mother somewhere and help her until she gives birth, then go and learn the ways of magic."

"But father..." He cut me off.

"Kindra!" He raised his voice as much as he could. "This is the last command that I give you. Please obey me."

I hesitated, I didn't want to let him go. I had just gotten him back. Slowly I nodded, "Yes father. I will do as you command. I will be waiting for your descendant."

"Good," He smiled once more. "He won't be alone Kindra."

"I understand."

His smiled faded and he closed his eyes and stopped breathing.

"Father!" I put my head on his chest and cried for a long time before my mother urged me to leave. "Alright mother, let's go hide."

(What happened to Rain and Sterling? I don't know, you can make a post if you want Dee. Hope you aren't mad at me.)

Sterling's rude awakening

"What is going on" I just kept asking her, but she was in a rush and wouldn't tell me anything.

"You need to speed up time.."

"Right, and how am I going to do that? I can't even make a submarine with auto pilot."

"Uh, you have other powers."

Before I could ask her anything else she was out the door. Rain came up behind me. She stood silently and didn't say a word until I spoke, "what is going on here? and why are so so quiet all the time now?"

"I, uh, there's something I've been meaning to tell you. But this is hardly the time or place."

"Now is as good a time as any, especially if I die the minute I leave this building."

"You can't die, you need to take care of us." she stopped short, realizing what she'd just said.

I just stared at her in disbelief. She answered the question in my eyes with a crooked smile. "Right, then I guess I will have to go out there and fight for you." I said boldly, trying to sound macho. Maybe I over did it a little, because she giggled a little as I turned and marched towards the door. I had to think of something quick, something romantic and maybe a little cliche.

So I took a line from the popular earth film Gone with the Wind, "And if a bullet gets me, so help me, I'll laugh at myself for being an idiot. There's one thing I do know... and that is that I love you, [Rain]. In spite of you and me and the whole silly world going to pieces around us, I love you."

With that I was out the door.

....to be continued

Kindra

It was coming to quickly, my father wasn't ready yet, Deothanos would not wait. I didn't blame him though, he only had a few weeks at best until he was powerless, I could sense the virus growing inside him. My mother had sensed him coming as well and was going to meet him and delay him as best she could, while I found Sterling.

He was in a room alone with Rain, I really didn't want to intrude but I had no choice. I knocked on the door once before walking inside. Fortunately they were just sitting together on one of the couches.

"Pardon," I said. "Sterling I need to talk to you, alone."

He excused himself from Rain and stepped outside with me and followed as I began walking off towards the exit.

"We need your special talents right now Sterling," I pleaded. "Not the power you are most familiar with."

"Why what's going on?" He asked. "Are we in danger?"

"Yes, Deothanos is outside right now battling with my mother," I informed him. "Only you can stop him."

"What do you mean?" He asked again.

"He's been infected with the virus," I told him. "He's got a few weeks before it begins to affect him. You can speed up time. Specifically the mutation rate of the virus, but it doesn't matter whether you simply age the virus a few weeks or his entire body or even all of us in this building, but you have to stop him Sterling. My father isn't ready yet and, if I woke him from the state he's in he'd die and all of this would be put to waste. My father will need us when he is finished, all of us."

We finally got to the door leading outside. I continued, "I'll be helping block his mental waves but I'm no match for him, all I can do is give you a fighting chance to succeed. Good luck."

I opened it and charged out into the open, invisible. He was busy fighting the shadows that seemed to be alive.
